How to quit Zyn and nicotine pouches
Pouches are easy to use all day without anyone noticing, which is exactly what makes them hard to stop. Here is a plan that works with that.
The short version: count how many pouches you use, pick a quit day, decide whether to step down first, swap the lip habit for something nicotine-free, and plan for the first 3 days.
A five-step plan
-
Know your number
For two days, notice how many pouches you use and when. Many people are surprised. Your times of day become your trigger list.
-
Pick a quit day
Choose a day within the next week. Tell someone you trust, and add them as a backup person you can text when a craving hits.
-
Cold turkey or step down
Stepping down means moving to a lower strength, then fewer pouches a day, before your quit day. Cold turkey means you stop on the day. If you want to use nicotine gum or lozenges, ask a pharmacist or doctor what is right for you.
-
Replace the lip habit
Part of the pull is the feeling of a pouch, not just the nicotine. Keep nicotine-free pouches, gum, mints or seeds where your tins used to be.
-
Clear the tins and plan for triggers
Check your car, desk, gym bag and jacket. Common triggers are after meals, workouts, work stress, driving and first thing in the morning. Plan one swap for each.
Zyn withdrawal timeline
Everyone is different, but this is what many people notice. It is general information, not medical advice.
- First 24 hoursCravings and restlessness start, often at your usual pouch times.
- Days 1 to 3Cravings, irritability and trouble focusing often peak. Many people say day 3 is the hardest.
- Days 4 to 7Cravings usually start to come less often, though trigger moments can still be strong.
- Week 2Sleep and mood often settle. The reach for a tin becomes less automatic.
- Weeks 3 to 4For many people, most physical symptoms have faded.
- Month 2 and onCravings are rarer and tied to specific places, people or stress.

Are Zyn pouches safe?
In January 2025 the FDA authorized 20 Zyn products (3 mg and 6 mg) for sale to adults 21 and over. The FDA says this does not mean they are safe or "FDA approved", and they are not approved quit aids. Nicotine is addictive, high-strength pouches can raise heart rate about as much as a cigarette, and some people get mouth sores or gum irritation. If something in your mouth doesn't heal, see a dentist or doctor.
If you slip
One pouch doesn't erase your progress, but it can make the next one easier. Notice the trigger, plan a swap, and get back to your plan right away. Your clean days still count.

Questions people ask
How long does Zyn withdrawal last?
For many people, cravings and irritability are strongest in the first 3 days and most physical symptoms fade within 2 to 4 weeks. Habit cravings, like reaching for a pouch after a meal, can last longer but get rarer.
Should I quit Zyn cold turkey or step down?
Either can work. Some people drop from 6 mg to 3 mg pouches and use fewer each day before stopping. Others stop on a set day. Pick a quit day either way.
What can I use instead of Zyn?
Many people miss the feeling of something in their lip. Nicotine-free pouches, gum, mints or sunflower seeds can fill that gap while the habit fades.
