How to quit vaping

Quitting is hard because nicotine and habit pull at the same time. A simple plan for both makes it a lot easier.

The short version: pick a quit day, get rid of your vapes, plan one swap for each trigger, and use a 60-second breathing break whenever a craving hits. Expect days 1 to 3 to be the hardest.

A five-step plan

  1. Pick a quit day

Choose a day within the next week. A calm day with fewer triggers, like a weekend, can help. Put it in your calendar and tell one person.

  2. Decide: cold turkey or step down

Cold turkey means you stop completely on your quit day. Stepping down means using lower-strength pods or vaping less for a week or two first. If you want to use nicotine replacement like gum or lozenges, ask a pharmacist or doctor what fits you.

  3. Clear out your vapes

Throw away disposables, pods and chargers the night before. Check your car, bag, desk and jacket pockets. A vape within reach turns a craving that would pass in minutes into a slip.

  4. Plan for your triggers

Most vaping happens at the same moments: after meals, with friends, while drinking, driving, or when stressed or bored. Write down your top three and one swap for each, like a walk after lunch or gum in the car.

  5. Have a craving plan

When a craving hits, breathe slowly for 60 seconds, remind yourself why you are quitting, and text or call someone. Cravings rise and fall, often within a few minutes.

Vaping withdrawal timeline

Everyone is different, but this is what many people notice. It is general information, not medical advice.

Common vape withdrawal symptoms

If you slip

A slip is not the end of your quit. Most people who quit for good needed more than one try. One slip doesn't have to become two: notice what triggered it, plan a swap for next time, and get back to your plan right away. Your clean days still count.

Questions people ask

How long does vape withdrawal last?

For many people, cravings and irritability peak in the first 3 days and most physical symptoms fade within 2 to 4 weeks. Cravings tied to habits, like after meals or with friends, can show up for longer but get rarer over time.

Why is day 3 the hardest when quitting vaping?

Withdrawal usually peaks in the first 2 to 3 days as your body adjusts to no nicotine, so many people find day 2 or 3 the hardest, with cravings, irritability and trouble focusing. It usually gets easier after the first week.

Is it better to quit vaping cold turkey or slowly?

Both work for different people. Cold turkey is fastest. Stepping down to lower nicotine first can feel easier. Either way, pick a firm quit day and a plan for cravings.

What can I do instead of vaping?

Keep your hands and mouth busy with water, gum or mints, take a short walk, or do 60 seconds of slow breathing. Each craving usually passes within minutes.
